I have no dance experience. Is it core strength that is needed? Flexibility? Shoulder strength? It’s hard to give feedback is what your dancer is lacking without visual reference but normally, the biggest and most common mistake I see from beginner dancers training to accomplish this move, is that they do not drive/start their movement from the hips (which is why the instructor literally says “hips up”).

Frontiers | Cognitive Benefits of Social Dancing and Walking in Old Age: The Dancing Mind Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: A physically active lifestyle has the potential to prevent cognitive decline and dementia, yet the optimal type of physical activity/exercise rem... The intervention group received 1 h of ballroom dancing twice weekly over 8 months (~69 sessions) in local community dance studios. The control group received a combination of a home walking program with a pedometer and optional biweekly group-based walking in local community park to facilitate socialization. Results: One hundred and fifteen adults (mean 69.5 years, SD 6.4) completed baseline and delayed baseline (3 weeks apart) before being randomized to either dance (n = 60) or walking (n = 55). Of those randomized, 79 (68%) completed the follow-up measurements (32 weeks from baseline). Conclusion: The superior potential of dance over walking on executive functions of cognitively healthy and active older adults was not supported. Dance improved one of the cognitive domains (spatial memory) important for learning dance. In the only longitudinal study where leisure-time activity-specific benefits were compared, frequent dancing (≥3 times/week) was associated with lower risk of dementia [hazard ratio (HR) of 0.24 CI: 0.06–0.99], similar to playing a musical instrument. By contrast, the association with walking was weaker and of only marginal significance (HR = 0.67 CI: 0.45–1.05) (Verghese et al., 2003).

True origin behind 'Crip walk' as Serena Williams does controversial dance move during Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl show

What a Crip walk is as Kendrick Lamar and Serena Williams do the controversial dance move at the Super Bowl in the performance of 'Not Like Us' While many focused on the many more obvious digs at Drake in Kendrick Lamar’s performance - such as the 'A Minor' line sung out by the crowd during 'Not Like Us' - one moment that has been much talked about is Serena Williams coming out to do a ‘crip walk’, a dance move Lamar also did during the performance.Henry 'Crip' Heard was a Harlem dance legend (Mann Robinson via TikTok) Williams first did the Crip walk in 2012 at Wimbledon, eliciting a massive backlash which many argued was disproportionate.Williams at the time responded strongly, saying: “First of all, it was just a dance. I didn't know that's what it was called. “Second, why are you asking me that? If anything, you should be trying to ask me questions to lift me up not bring such things … I'm done with that question.” · In a video posted to X, which you can watch below, Williams went into more detail about why she crip walked during Kendrick’s performance. The earliest videos of the dance known as a ‘Crip walk’ is from Henry ‘Crip’ Heard, a Harlem dance legend who lost an arm and a leg in a car accident.

Walking: a lesson for dancers - Delta.Dance

You’ve walked since you were a year old, so chances are you don’t spend much time thinking about it. Take a moment to analyze how you walk. Your dancing will thank you. After teaching several hundred people how to dance over the past eight years, one thing that stands out is how many people disconnect dance movement from normal types of movement. They walk into the studio just like they walk down the street, but when they first learn to dance they will often initiate strange actions that are disconnected from the way they walk.We don’t normally think about how we walk. After all, we’ve been doing it pretty much our whole life. The only people who spend much time evaluating how people walk are chiropractors, shoe makers and dance teachers. But let’s take a minute to study that, because it relates well to how we dance. When babies first learn to walk, they discover this strange force we call gravity. It pushes them down and makes it hard to stand up. Balance becomes a key element in being able to stand in one spot for any length of time. Then we learn to move faster; to run, and some things become different. Where we place our feet is slightly different in running than in walking, due to the extra momentum involved. When they first learn to dance, people often initiate strange actions that are disconnected from the way they walk.

The Dance Equation: "Dancing = Walking" — Arthur Murray Inner West

You may have heard your teacher say “Dancing is just like walking. If you can walk you can dance and vice-versa” so why does it feel difficult or that our teacher is lying to us? So how is “dancing” and “walking” similar? When we walk down the street we change from one foot to the other without thinking (Right, Left, Right, Left), it just naturally occurs. Dancing is the same in this aspect, we always change from one foot to the other (Right, Left, Right, Left); the difference being a change in direction. In our normal, everyday life we may not realise how many times we change direction whether it is stepping to the side out of someone’s way, walking back a few steps when pulling open a door or turning around when we hear someone call our name; what’s different is our mentality to approaching dancing. Some other similarity between dancing and walking happen during our Smooth dances (Tango, Fox Trot, Waltz). Again, when we walk down the street, we strike the pavement with the heel of our foot first and roll through to the toe. This is beautiful Smooth Footwork Technique!Don’t change a thing! You’re already dancing! Similarly when we are walking, we move our opposite arm to the foot we are stepping on; this is for counterbalance and to help stop us from falling over.

The Meaning Behind Serena Williams’ Super Bowl Cameo | TIME

The tennis champion did a crip walk dance as Kendrick Lamar performed his Drake diss track “Not Like Us.” “It was just a dance,” Williams, whose older sister Yetunde Price was killed by a member of the Southside Crips gang in 2003, responded when questioned in 2012. More than 12 years later, however, she still remembers the backlash, which defenders long claimed was overblown and racist: “Man, I did not crip walk like that at Wimbledon.“For those of y’all who weren’t outside, the media tore Serena to shreds for crip walking at Wimbledon,” one user wrote on X. “Her coming back to do a dance that references a culture she’s actually a part of, during a live performance criticizing someone for being a culture vulture is *chef’s kiss.*”While hosting last year’s ESPY Awards, Williams teased, “If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that none of us, not a single one of us, not even me, should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar,” before dancing to “Not Like Us.” “He will make your hometown not like you.For less than five seconds in the closing moments of the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show, as headliner Kendrick Lamar performed his Grammy-award winning Drake diss track “Not Like Us,” the camera flipped to the corner of the stage to show 43-year-old tennis all-time-great Serena Williams crip walking.

Her Stepdad Wants To Walk Her Down The Aisle, But She Told Him She’ll Walk Alone

She said traditionally the bride is given away by her father and dances with her father and my brother asked mom if I was supposed to walk and dance with a photo or were we getting a cutout or did she expect us to dig him up. My stepdad told me he would like to walk me down the aisle and perform a father-daughter dance at the wedding with me.I told him it was a kind offer but I had decided to walk down the aisle alone and skip all special dances outside of the first dance.I only asked because my mom raised me and my brother (29m) alone for several years after our dad passed away when we were 6 and 8 years old and I felt like if I were to walk with any living person it would be her.I got the same assurances from my brother and SIL. But my mom and stepdad were quick to tell me I was wrong and mom was upset that I had not reached out after the dinner ordeal to ask her husband to walk me then.

There’s a secret exercise I like to do as I walk around the city: I tone my core slightly, pull up through my abs and back, and stand as straight as I can.I’m all about finding new way to compare how we move in our everyday lives to dancing: It certainly makes it easier to learn if you can connect it to something you already know. And other than sleeping, what do we do more often than walking? If we were dancing a foxtrot or waltz, we could add more brushing of the feet, or step on a bent knee while brushing the balls of our feet for rumba or other Latin dances (try practicing this while climbing a flight of stairs). It may take some conscious thought at first, but again, you’re basically still walking.Walking actually has a lot to do with dancing, especially for progressive dances like waltz, tango, and foxtrot.
